As I mentioned in the last post here, I recently photographed the Inov8 sponsored adventure racer Alli Northcott for an interview in the current issue of Shred West magazine; I met Alli while shooting an adventure race for the event organiser Endurance Life and had already briefly discussed the possibility of meeting up for a photo-shoot at some point so it was a happy coincidence when the editor of Shred asked if I could shoot an outdoor environmental portrait of her for an interview in the next issue. The wheat-field location in the image is just a few feet from my front door and is somewhere that I’d had in mind for a while for a portrait, and it was ultimately chosen for this assignment as we live within just a few miles of each other and Alli’s heavy race/work schedule dictated that the location would have to be close to her home (we ended up doing the shoot very early one Saturday morning, not long after sunrise – we got lucky with the weather…).

Also at the Celebrate Start Bay event last weekend was the adventure race organiser Endurance Life with the launch of their new Trail Blaze course which begins and ends at the Sea Breeze Cafe in Torcross; an electronic key is hired from the cafe which is then used at each of the checkpoints at intervals along each of the five way-marked routes which vary from 2 to 24 miles along the coastline between Strete Gate and East Portlemouth. On completion of a route the overall time and split times are automatically uploaded to a leaderboard on the Trail Blaze website and the time and current leaderboard position is sent to the individual’s mobile phone via SMS. The launch was far more low-key than planned due to the heavy storms that hit the Devon coast overnight making it impossible to erect the Endurance Life gantry which the trail runners were to set-off from, but the rain eased to a drizzle for the start at 11AM and the athletes set-off in on the inaugural run which included members of the British Telemark Ski Team who were in South Devon for a Summer training weekend.

I shot an assignment recently for the adventure racing event organiser Endurance Life which included photographing each team as they left the overnight camp at Princetown on Dartmoor to head out into the night on an orienteering portion of the Coast2Coast 2008. This was a last minute booking and due to prior commitments I could only arrive at the location 30 minutes before the 10:00pm start, and with the ambient light pretty much gone from the sky at this point it was obvious that I’d need to set-up some off-camera strobes to provide the lighting. It was pretty tight but needless to say I got the lighting gear set up, fired off a few test frames to check the exposure and flash ratios and was ready to start shooting by the time the competitors started to line up. The image above is of one of the teams waiting at the start (they were set-off in 30-second intervals), checking their lights and maps before heading out onto the moors.
