Nice review, Simon, and very interesting. I also use the Ranger Quadra - mainly for outdoor sports photography (review on my blog). As you say, nothing's perfect, but the Quadra is a great tool. Cheers, Luke

Superb pictures! Many thanks for allowing us to use them. Strong images are fundamental to telling a story, and it's great to get the chance to display regional artists so well.

Cheers!

Only once; just last week. I turned the pack off and then back on and it worked fine after that. Pocket Wizards are definitely more reliable but the Skyport system is so much more convenient...

Hey thanks for the quick reply! I read your review on the quadra and had the same problem with the EL Skyport transmitter failing a couple of times and had to resort to my other radio trigger. How's it going with you? Are you still experiencing the same issue?

There's no cover on the flashtube; it doesn't worry me too much but you should consider it when packing them into a different case/bag, and I certainly wouldn't recommend throwing the heads into a bag loose. I have the dividers set out in the LowePro bag so that each head has it's own padded compartment.

I just bought a quadra set yesterday and am thinking of buying another bag so that I won't have to remove the RQ-EL adapters. Is there any cover you are putting on the flashtube to protect it? From the pic above of your Magnum, looks like the bulb is unprotected.

Is this something that should concern quadra users?

Thanks Andy. The Nikon D90 has an on-board mono mic which needless to say isn't very good; I initially bought a Rode hotshoe mount mic which I thought I could plug straight into the camera body but the D90 does not have this function (the D300 and D3s do) so I returned the Rode mic and picked up a Zoom H2 instead. Ideally you use a clapperboard (or the budget option that I used; just clap hands) which gives a visual/sound cue to marry up the sound (I'm using Final Cut Pro) with the picture and then remove the clip's original sound track. One issue with this is remembering to clap at the beginning of the take, but worse was that the sound was starting to drift towards the end of the clip (despite the sound being recorded in 16bit) which provided the biggest headache. Ultimately I compressed the duration of the sound clip to 99% (after some playing around with different durations) and this solved the problem. I've been thinking about behind the scenes videos for a while but they're difficult to do in practice as ideally you need someone on-set that can work the camera and doesn't have anything else to do...
