One of my band portraits of the Plymouth based groupĀ Brotherhood Of The Lake made it into the current issue of Rock Sound Magazine available now from all good newsagents… The band’s new album ‘Iron Sails” will be released on June 28th 2010 and gets a glowing write up by Rock Sound, stating: ‘we promise you won’t hear as many records as good as this in 2010…’.

Great image of the band, Simon. Would you elaborate on the technical details of how it was made? I’d really like to know how you lit them so well. Are these Elinchrom lights?
Best regards.
Thanks Mark. This shoot was my first proper outing with the Elinchrom Ranger Quadra at the very beginning of this year. The lighting setup was super-simple with one pack/head and the Rotalux 100cm softbox attached, at full power and positioned directly above the camera with the rising sun directly behind the band providing the separation light. The lack of fill light gives a very high contrast without being harsh as the key light from the softbox has such a nice quality and soft edge to it, and shadows are kept to a minimum due to the on axis/slightly higher position. The directional quality of the softbox is something I really like and provides the significant light falloff from the subject’s faces in the lower half of the frame. Camera settings were F16 1/250 at ISO 200 with the Nikon 35mm F2 lens.
